    Jim,

I think you’re right on the mark. If you haven’t read it already, you might enjoy “FAB: The Coming Revolution on your Desktop – from Personal Computers to Personal Fabrication”

    by Neil Gershenfeld

    ISBN 0-465-02745-8

Fab discusses just how some of your ideas may be made real. In a nutshell, a major theme is that mass production will be replaced by mass customization made possible by smart tools allowing manufacturing at the cottage level. Complex projects might be accomplished by ad hoc networking of small scale manufacturing.

I couldn’t agree more. There is a decent chance that 3D printing could become THE defining technology of the decade. As such, I currently hold shares of DDD, SSYS, and FARO in my investment accounts…

Personal fabrication is where home computers were in the early 1980’s. It’s kind of a nerdy thing right now, but if it goes mainstream, it could be huge.
